I’ve always wished that I had a garden. But my place in this metropolitan city won’t allow that. There’s no space for me to grow flowers and plants and watch butterflies flutter across orchids on spring mornings. I haven’t got the resources or the backyard to nurture a petunia paradise. I languish instead in a cramped apartment room, on the 19th floor of a cold gray building, with only a window view of the roaring traffic below and the rather un-pretty sight of drunken bar hoppers at night. Pardon me, therefore, if I settle for the next best thing: garden screensavers. If I can’t brighten my living quarters with the real thing, then at least I can opt for mesmerizing flowerscapes on my computer screen.
I recently downloaded free screensavers to bring my imagined scenes of outdoor beauty indoors. What’s more, I don’t have to fret with the task of having to water anything. Ha! Not wanting to be stuck with the same screensaver all the time, I am shuffling three nature screensavers that portray the garden that I have always wanted, but couldn’t have just yet.
The first one is called Butterfly Gardens, a 3D screensaver that elegantly combines beautiful photographic landscapes with clever, realistic animation. Well, it’s actually a montage of pictures – of colorful flower gardens on sunny days, with bright vivid colors that arrest the eye. The animation blends in perfectly: butterflies frolic over the plants and flowers, while leaves and petals sway with the breeze. Looking at this nature screensaver helps me relax; as soon as my computer snoozes, I am transported from garden to garden, without having to leave my seat at the desk.
Not that I’ll get bored with the first, but I downloaded another photo screensaver just in case I nurse a sudden desire for even more new garden sceneries. This one is called Messengers of Spring, and it features a slideshow of the outdoor beauty of spring, heralding its own arrival in royal fashion. There are photos here of rows of tulips; of window boxes overflowing with violets and lush greenery; of carefully-tended backyard gardens; and of thriving wildflowers that heighten my sense of appreciation for nature.
The third and last free nature screensaver I have downloaded somewhat brings me to a nostalgic mood. Called Spring Blossoms, it reminds me of the fertile beauty of Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand where I had vacationed two years ago, and where some of the country’s highest mountains are situated. This garden 3D screensaver is again one of those that fuse still photographs with subtle animation. It features photos of colorful spring blossoms, highlighted by a touchingly tiny birdhouse hanging from a tree branch and then by a tranquil lake through which geese slice. The transition is smooth; the animated elements, realistic.
Of course, there are butterflies. Having always wanted beautiful gardens similar to that which I find displayed on my computer, I cannot not imagine butterflies.
