I would like to preface this review by saying once again that I do not approve of the color pink. Although this screensaver review is otherwise favorable, it should not in any way be taken as an endorsement of the color pink. End public service announcement.
So. Sometimes you just want something silly and fun, and when I stumbled on this sexy screensaver, I immediately loved it. Although the colors are almost all various hews of pink, the other graphic design elements more than make up for the color.
The party girl screensaver starts out with a graphic element background of large circles and a repeated pattern of the letters “p” and “g” and possibly “a,” though it’s hard to tell for sure. The letters for “party girl” fly onto the screen along with girly silhouettes too quickly to really process either.
Meanwhile white flower graphics float across the screen and, in some areas, dark pink flower graphics float from drink glasses or the girls’ mouths. Finally the apparently supreme party girl pops out of the background, a fully drawn contrast to the other three silhouettes. Once this mini-scene completes, we are smoothly transitioned to a new scene with a white background. The three silhouettes from the first scene stay along with the words “party girls” and new floating flower graphics, creating a pleasing, logo-like image.
I think what I like most about this screensaver is how well it uses the iconography of the fashion world. Although the connection is subtle, the poses and styles used to portray various female figures are socially attached to fashion ads and tags. I could easily expect to see any frozen screenshot from this girly screensaver to appear as an ad for a new clothing line in the New Yorker Magazine.
The drink held in the hand of one silhouette gives the extra little bit to keep the mood of fun and party instead of strictly fashion and appearance, but it still clearly works within that world. The floating flowers also keep the image light, but are simultaneously common graphic elements in fashion iconography. I love how this screensaver is serving its two purposes without sacrificing either.
Also nice is the use of text, blended with the simple drawings. This too, lends to the feeling of an ad, and not at all in a bad way. It reminds me of the kind of ad you might frame and put on your kitchen wall. In other words it works as much for visual pleasure as it does for advertising purposes. That is just as true for the screensaver, which, though it resembles a fashion ad, is clearly not advertising anything, and will instead, be a nice visual comment on your computer screen.
